To Ski or Not to Ski?

by Sheila O'Connor

onsidering a trip to North Lake Tahoe for some skiing? If Sugarbowl is on your list then you will be visiting one of the area’s best resorts. Even if you have children in tow, there’s enough to keep everybody busy for days.

If you’re looking for a place to stay, then check out the Boomtown Hotel and Casino, just seven miles from Reno. Boomtown ski packages will give you the choice of Tahoe ski resorts, with free ski shuttle to certain resorts.

Boomtown is the closest Reno casino to north Tahoe skiing.

Nestled at the base of the Sierra Mountains, Boomtown is the closest Reno casino to north Tahoe skiing. After an exhilarating day on the slopes, we returned to an evening of gaming excitement, four restaurants to choose from, and a luxurious guestroom. The 318 suites range from one-room studios to larger suites with two bedrooms, Jacuzzi tub, wet bar and balcony. The restaurants range from a simple coffee stand to a sumptuous All You-Can-Eat steak and seafood buffet, including Maine lobster brought all the way from Prince Edward Island.

Children won’t ever feel left out. The Family Fun Center offers 35,000 square feet of rides, indoor miniature golf and the latest video and virtual games. You’ll be lucky if you can get them to leave the area! There’s even a digital 3D motion theater (Nevada’s only one), an antique carousel, and a covered wagon Ferris wheel.

Recreational activities for adults include an indoor heated pool, free nightly cabaret shows, and a 9-hole miniature golf course.

Boomtown started as a small café in 1945, run by a husband and wife team who moved to the area from Idaho. They bought the original restaurant then known as the Wishing Well Café, then another business that they named Bill and Effie’s Truck Stop. In 1960, when gaming licenses were available, the couple added a casino. A few years later they moved the café to its current location to take advantage of the traffic on the Lincoln Highway (now Interstate 80). They added more slot machines and a restaurant, and once the business became successful, they sold it and retired. Over the years the business has been enlarged again. A hotel was added in 1978, and the Family Fun Center in 1993.

These days, your biggest decision will be whether to go outside and ski, or just enjoy all the temptations inside.
